Beyond the Mic: Exploring Non-Rap Careers in Hip-Hop

When you think of hip-hop, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the music itself, but the industry is much more than that. From the creative process to the business side, there are numerous job opportunities within hip-hop. In this article, we’ll explore some of the roles available for those interested in working in the industry beyond being a recording artist.

Songwriting, producing, audio engineering, DJing, being an A&R representative, being a music attorney, being a music Publicist, and tour managing are all lucrative ways to earn a living within the hip-hop industry.

Here are a few lists of examples of note-worthy professionals in each field.

The Creative Side

Songwriter

Songwriters create the lyrics and melody for a song and can work with recording artists to bring their vision to life.

Notable songwriters are Ice Cube (for his writing contributions during the N.W.A. era for co-members Eazy- E and Dr. Dre), Jay-Z (for his writing contribution and co-production of Still D.R.E. for both Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg), and Cyhi The Prynce (for his writing contributions on many Kanye West projects such as Watch the Throne and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy) to name a few.

1. DJ Kool Herc – Known as the “Father of Hip Hop,” DJ Kool Herc is credited with originating the breakbeat technique, which involved looping the instrumental portion of a song to create a beat for MCs to rap over.

A&R Representative

A&R (Artists and Repertoire) representatives are an essential part of the music industry, responsible for scouting new talent, managing artists’ careers, and helping them produce their best work.
